Greg Hicks is a Canadian business executive and entrepreneur based in Toronto, Ontario. He has served as the President and CEO of the Canadian Tire Corporation since March 2020. He took over as leader the day after COVID-19 was declared a global crisis, leading the company through unprecedented challenges for the retail industry while strengthening its brand trust among Canadians. Hicks has a background in retail and consumer strategy and has proven to be a forward-thinking, visionary leader with a deep understanding of the Canadian market.

Early life

As a young man, Greg Hicks attended the University of Western Ontario, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. He furthered his education at the University of Western Ontario’s Richard Ivey School of Business, earning an Honours Business Administration.

Career

Before working at Canadian Tire, Hicks was the COO of TSC Stores, a Canadian retail chain specializing in farm and ranch goods. At TSC, he managed all aspects of the company, accruing experience that would become valuable in his future roles.

He joined Canadian Tire Corporation in 2013 as Senior Vice President of Automotive. In this role, he led one of the company’s key product divisions, driving operational and customer engagement efforts. Later on, Greg Hicks was named Senior Vice President of Marketing, where he oversaw brand development, digital marketing, and retail promotions.

Hicks later moved up to the position of Group Senior Vice President, Consumer Products & Retail Experience. In that position, he was responsible for the general merchandise and automotive businesses, store operations, customer experience, product sourcing, and quality assurance for Canadian Tire. He was also responsible for the management of Canadian Tire’s Pacific Rim sourcing offices in Asia, expanding his operational experience globally.

In 2017, he became President of Canadian Tire Retail (CTR), the largest business unit within the corporation. As President, Hicks was responsible for the operations of over 500 retail outlets located throughout Canada. He managed an expansion of Canadian Tire’s Owned Brands portfolio, which exceeded $4 billion in sales in 2019. He also oversaw the purchase of Party City’s Canadian operations, adding substantially to the company’s retail operations.

Greg Hicks was named President and CEO of Canadian Tire Corporation on March 12th, 2020. He was appointed just days before COVID-19 was officially deemed a global pandemic. During his tenure, Hicks has spearheaded and overseen several initiatives by CTC focused on digital transformation, supply chain resilience, and increased customer loyalty. In 2022, Greg Hicks launched the “Better Connected” plan, which sought to merge the company’s various brands, banners, and retail channels to provide a consistent omnichannel offering. Next, he rolled out “True North” strategy, which was centered around how data and technology would enable the company to drive efficiency and personalization across the business.
