Early life

Donald Cooper’s journey in the business world started very early—at the tender age of just six years old—when he started sweeping the floors of his family’s sporting goods business for a wage of five cents a day. This hands-on introduction to manual labour gave him a fundamental understanding of the concepts of work, responsibility, as well as the value of a hard-earned paycheque.

Later, as a young man, Cooper went on to study business at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. There, he earned both an undergraduate degree and an MBA from that institution’s Ivey Business School.

Career

Donald Cooper spent the first 18 years of his career working at Cooper Canada Ltd., his family’s Toronto, Ontario-based business. Cooper Canada Ltd. grew from a small, boutique concern making hockey gear at its inception into a global leader in manufacturing and distributing sports equipment in subsequent decades. During his time there, Cooper held the position of Executive Vice President and served as a co-owner. Under his leadership, the company expanded its workforce to nearly 3,000 people, opened several factories internationally, and grew to become one of Canada’s most well-recognized and iconic brands.

At age 43, Donald Cooper decided to make a major career change. He left the corporate world to start his own fashion and retail company, Alive & Well Inc. In just three years, he managed to build the company into one of Canada’s most innovative retailers. By focusing on creating extraordinary value at every point of interaction, Cooper has been widely acknowledged in business circles to have substantially transformed how fashion and retail customers experience shopping. In recognition of his multiple achievements with Alive & Well, Cooper received 7 different awards for excellence in the disciplines of marketing, service, and business innovation. He was also named Canada’s Outstanding Innovative Retailer.
