Dan Gilbert is an American entrepreneur, investor, sports owner, and philanthropist. He is best known as the founder and chairman of Rocket Companies. He also owns the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Gilbert began his career in real estate and mortgage lending. He later built a business portfolio spanning finance, technology, real estate, sports, and entertainment. He founded Rock Financial in 1985. The company later became Quicken Loans in 2000, then Rocket Companies in 2020. Currently, Rocket Companies includes businesses such as Rocket Mortgage, Redfin, and Rocket Money.

Early life

Daniel Bruce Gilbert was born on January 17, 1962, in Detroit, Michigan. He grew up in Southfield, Michigan and attended Southfield-Lathrup High School.

Gilbert’s interest in business started at a young age. His father owned a Detroit bar. His grandfather ran a car wash business. Gilbert also started a neighbourhood pizza delivery service at age 12.

Gilbert earned a bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University, then a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School.

He earned his real estate agent license while in college. While in law school, he started working part-time at his parents’ Century 21 real estate agency. These early experiences introduced him to real estate and finance.

Career

Gilbert co-founded Rock Financial in 1985. His business partners included Ron Berman, Lindsay Gross, and his brother Gary Gilbert. The company started as a mortgage lender and later expanded its online operations, reaching customers in several U.S. states.

In 2000, Intuit acquired Rock Financial. The company was renamed Quicken Loans. Gilbert and a group of investors later bought the company back in 2002. Quicken Loans grew rapidly under Gilbert’s leadership. The company also expanded its presence in Detroit and eventually moved its headquarters downtown in 2010. The company later became Rocket Companies and went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2020.

Aside from mortgage lending, Gilbert’s business experience includes technology and real estate. He is a co-founder of tech investment companies Detroit Venture Partners and Stock X. He also founded Bedrock, a commercial real estate development firm with projects in Detroit and Cleveland.

Sports franchise ownership is another big part of Gilbert’s career. In 2005, he acquired the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers for $375 million. He purchased the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters a year later, followed by the NBA’s Cleveland Charge in 2011.

Gilbert is a passionate philanthropist. He established the Gilbert Family Foundation in 2015 to support medical research and community programs. In 2021, the Gilbert Family Foundation and Rocket Community Fund announced a combined $500 million commitment over 10 years. The funding supports Detroit residents and neighbourhoods. Focus areas include housing, economic mobility, entrepreneurship, arts, and culture.

Gilbert advocates for research on neurofibromatosis in honour of his son, who passed away in 2023. He serves on the board of several organizations, including the Cleveland Clinic and the Children’s Tumor Foundation.
