Steven Anthony Ballmer is an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist, mostly known for his role as CEO of Microsoft (2000 to 2014). As Microsoft’s 30th employee and Bill Gates first hired business manager, Ballmer helped scale the software giant, leading key divisions before steering the company through massive revenue growth and a transition to enterprise and cloud services as CEO. Following his retirement from Microsoft, he turned to sports and civic leadership. He bought the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers & co-founded the Ballmer Group, a charitable investment organization dedicated to improving economic mobility for children and families in America.
Steven Anthony Ballmer was born on March 24th, 1956, in Detroit, Michigan. He is the son of Beatrice Dworkin (1920 to 1997) and Frederic Henry Ballmer (1923 to 2000), a manager at the Ford Motor Company.
Raised in Farmington Hills, Ballmer excelled in academics from a young age. He spent three years living in Brussels as a student at the International School of Brussels before returning to Michigan. He graduated as valedictorian from Detroit Country Day School, achieving a perfect score of 800 on the mathematical section of the SAT and earning honours as a National Merit Scholar.
Ballmer later attended Harvard University, where he studied applied mathematics and economics. At Harvard, he managed the Harvard Crimson football team, wrote for the university’s publication and literary advocate, and lived down the hall from fellow sophomore Bill Gates. Notably, Ballmer scored higher than Gates in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1977.
After graduation, Ballmer worked as an assistant product manager for Procter & Gamble. There, he shared an office with future General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt. After a trial of writing screenplays in Hollywood, he enrolled at the Stanford Graduate School of Business to pursue an MBA, but dropped out in 1980 when Bill Gates convinced him to join Microsoft, which at the time was a growing startup.
Steve Ballmer joined Microsoft on June 11, 1980, as the company’s first official business manager. He was originally hired with a $50,000 salary and a profit-sharing model. His compensation was renegotiated into a significant equity stake when Microsoft incorporated in 1981, securing approximately 8% ownership of the company.
During his first 20 years with Microsoft, Ballmer proved to be a high-energy powerhouse, driving operations, sales, support, and operating systems development. He became Executive Vice President of Sales and Support in 1992, followed by a promotion to President in 1998, where he was then second-in-command under Gates.
On January 13, 2000, Ballmer officially became CEO of Microsoft. Throughout his 14 years in the role, Microsoft experienced remarkable financial growth. The company tripled its annual revenue from $25 billion to $70 billion and increased its net income by 215% to $23 billion. He successfully protected the highly profitable core franchises of Windows and Office against open-source competitors and Google Docs, while aggressively building a $20 billion Enterprise Business. With his guidance, companies like Windows Server, SQL Server, SharePoint, and Exchange rose to market dominance. He also championed the creation of the Xbox gaming division, orchestrated the multi-billion-dollar acquisition of Skype, and laid the foundations for Azure cloud services.
Ballmer’s retirement from Microsoft brought him even more opportunities. He acquired the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers for $2 billion, quickly earning a reputation as one of the league’s most enthusiastic and player-supportive owners. He is heavily invested in the franchise, culminating in the construction of the Intuit Dome. Aside from sports, Ballmer and his wife, Connie, founded the Ballmer Group, a charitable investment company that funds community programs, systemic reforms, and educational initiatives. He also launched USAFacts, a non-profit initiative designed to provide accessible, unbiased government data to the public.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Ballmer’s personal wealth is estimated at around $90 billion, making him the 8th wealthiest person in the world.
According to Forbes, Steven Anthony Ballmer’s net worth is approximately $124 billion as of July 2026.
