Devon Fiddler is a Cree entrepreneur from the province of Saskatchewan in Canada, best known for creating the company SheNative Goods Inc., where she holds the titles of Founder and Chief Changemaker. The SheNative brand produces and markets leather handbags and apparel often praised for blending modern fashion sensibilities with Indigenous cultural teachings. Since 2021, Devon Fiddler has also acted as Chief Executive Officer of the Waterhen Lake First Nation Development Corporation (WLFNDC), an organization whose mission is to strengthen the businesses of the Waterhen Lake First Nation and create economic prosperity through promoting diversity and adopting culturally sustainable practices.

Early life

Devon Fiddler grew up in northern Saskatchewan, on the Waterhen Lake First Nation. She later finished high school in the nearby town of Meadow Lake. After that, she enrolled in the University of Saskatchewan, eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts degree focusing on Aboriginal public administration.

Her first job after university was as a research assistant for the Meadow Lake Tribal Council’s economic development team. It didn’t take long before Fiddler was promoted to a new position where she was given the mandate of supporting people from nine First Nations in the area who wanted to start their own businesses. In carrying out this role, she spent her time reading business plans and going over financial documents, helping create business proposals and fill out funding applications. This experience sparked her interest in becoming an entrepreneur herself, as well as providing her with valuable skills and real-world experience.

Career

In 2014, Devon Fiddler launched SheNative Goods Inc., harbouring a vision to use design and storytelling to challenge harmful stereotypes and create positive change for Indigenous communities, especially for women and girls.

Although SheNative Goods Inc. began life as a company meant to support a small leather handbag line, it quickly escalated into a full-blown fashion brand. She would soon incorporate clothing, including pieces featuring her personal mantra: “She believed she could, so she did.” The public response was strong, and so apparel grew to become a key part of the business in addition to leather handbags. During these formative years, Devon Fiddler also built partnerships with Indigenous designers and artists to help shape SheNative’s product collections.

One of SheNative’s most notable projects is the Red Purse Collection, created to raise awareness about missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Inspired by the REDress Project by Métis artist Jamie Black, the collection sends 15% of profits to charities supporting Indigenous women.

In addition to running SheNative, Fiddler also fills a host of other important roles. She is currently a business advisor for Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan, as well as a proud mother. In the past, she co-founded Her 4 Directions, which is a pilot project aimed at empowering Indigenous women entrepreneurs, and sat on the board of directors of the Saskatoon Mother’s Centre.

Over the course of her career, Devon Fiddler has received several awards and accolades for her work, including the YWCA Women of Distinction Award, Startup Canada Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and the Trailblazers & Innovators Award from the Bank of Montreal, among many others. She also represented Canada at the G20 Young Entrepreneur Summit in Istanbul in 2015.
