Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani is an Indian billionaire industrialist and the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), India’s largest company by market capitalization. Known for transforming a domestic textile business into an international energy and tech giant, Ambani led the construction of the world’s largest petroleum refining complex in Jamnagar and fundamentally revolutionized India’s digital economy through the rollout of Reliance Jio. Recognized consistently as Asia’s wealthiest individual and a leading global innovator, his visionary leadership spans energy, telecommunications, retail, and green technology.
Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani was born on April 19, 1957, in Aden, present-day Yemen, into a Gujarati Hindu family. His father, Dhirubhai Ambani, was an ambitious entrepreneur who would later found Reliance Industries, and his mother, Kokilaben Ambani, raised Mukesh with his younger brother, Anil, and two sisters, Nina and Dipti.
In 1958, the family returned to India so Dhirubhai could establish a trading business specializing in spices and textiles. During his early childhood, Mukesh lived in a modest two-bedroom apartment in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai. Despite the family’s gradual commercial success, he was raised with a strong emphasis on discipline, hard work, and humility, using public transportation and focusing on his academics.
Ambani attended Hill Grange High School in Mumbai before pursuing higher education at St. Xavier’s College. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Chemical Engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai.
In 1980, while enrolled in the MBA program at Stanford University, Ambani made the pivotal decision to withdraw from his studies at his father’s request. Dhirubhai believed that practical, real-world experience trumped classroom theory, calling his son home to help manage a rapidly expanding yarn manufacturing unit, marking the official start of Mukesh’s business career.
Mukesh Ambani’s career with Reliance Industries Limited spans 40 years, during which he transformed a successful domestic textile maker into India’s largest publicly traded conglomerate and a global industrial powerhouse.
Upon returning to India in 1981, the 24-year-old Ambani was given charge of constructing the Patalganga petrochemical plant. This project marked the beginning of Reliance’s ambitious backward-integration strategy, moving from textiles into polyester fibers, petrochemicals, and petroleum refining. Ambani’s background in chemical engineering and his execution-focused leadership allowed RIL to build world-scale, highly efficient manufacturing facilities across India at unprecedented speeds.
In the late 1990s, Ambani directed the development of Reliance’s crown jewel: the Jamnagar Refinery complex in Gujarat. Conceptualized as a grassroots project, Jamnagar grew to become the largest petroleum refining complex in the world. Integrating oil refining with petrochemical processing, power generation, port infrastructure, and synthetic manufacturing, the complex achieved a capacity of over 660,000 barrels per day. The project established Ambani as one of the world’s foremost industrial engineers and project directors.
Recognizing that the future of business lay in digital connectivity, Ambani pioneered Reliance Infocomm in the early 2000s, laying the foundation for modern telecommunications in India. In 2016, he launched Reliance Jio Infocomm, a pan-India 4G broadband network. Jio fundamentally transformed India’s economy by providing affordable, high-speed data to hundreds of millions of citizens, catapulting India into one of the largest consumers of mobile data globally and fueling a nationwide digital innovation boom.
With Ambani as Chairman and Managing Director, RIL expanded into consumer-facing industries. He established Reliance Retail Limited, building it into India’s largest retail operator in electronics, grocery, and fashion. Beyond retail and telecom, Ambani expanded RIL’s footprint into media, digital services, and green energy, committing massive investments toward solar power, green hydrogen, and advanced energy storage systems to lead India’s transition to renewable energy.
Beyond traditional industry, Ambani has made an impact in Indian sports. In 2008, he acquired the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians, growing it into one of the world’s most valuable cricket teams. He also co-founded the Indian Super League to promote football development in India.

According to Forbes, Mukesh Ambani’s net worth is approximately $88.3 billion as of July 2026.
