Jim Balsillie is a Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist. He helped build one of the first global smartphone brands. He was best known as the co-chief executive officer of the firm that developed the BlackBerry. After leaving that job, he focused on supporting Canadian technology, research and public policy. He now leads and supports multiple innovation and international affairs companies in Canada.
Jim Balsillie was born on February 3, 1961, in Seaforth, Ontario. He grew up in Peterborough. His parents were Raymond and Laurel Balsillie.
As a teen, he showed an interest in business and hard work, doing paper routes and other jobs. He received a BComm degree from Trinity College at the University of Toronto (1984), followed by an MBA from Harvard Business School (1989). Later he earned a PhD from Wilfrid Laurier University (1992).
Balsillie started his career in accounting and finance. After earning his MBA, he worked in finance and executive roles for technology companies in Ontario. His time at these firms helped him gain experience in business strategy and operations before venturing into the tech startup industry.
In 1992, Balsillie invested his own capital into Research In Motion (RIM) and joined the company as co-chief executive officer with founder Mike Lazaridis. Back then, RIM was a small engineering firm working on wireless data technology. With the leadership of Balsillie and Lazaridis, the company grew quickly, building the BlackBerry brand and platform that became widely used in business, government, and global regulated industries. Balsillie focused on sales, strategic partnerships, global expansion, financing and corporate strategy while Lazaridis directed product development and engineering. As the business grew, RIM became a true multinational, generating billions in sales and hiring tens of thousands of people at its peak.
During his tenure, Balsillie also developed RIM’s IP strategy, commercializing tens of thousands of patents and positioning the company as a leader in mobile communications. His leadership helped push secure messaging, enterprise wireless solutions, and mobile email into the mainstream.
From the early 2000s to 2010s, competition began to rise with rivals like Apple and Android devices. In 2012, Balsillie resigned from his co-CEO role and later fully exited all duties at BlackBerry. His impact on the company’s growth is still a defining part of his career.
After his departure from RIM, Balsillie focused on Canadian innovation, public policy, and global affairs. He founded and chairs multiple research and policy institutions aimed at improving governance, technology policy and global collaboration. These include the Centre for International Governance Innovation, the Balsillie School of International Affairs, the Centre for Digital Rights, and the Arctic Research Foundation. He also co-founded the Council of Canadian Innovators, the Institute for New Economic Thinking in New York, and the CIO Strategy Council in Canada.
Balsillie serves on several boards including international research companies. He is an Honorary Captain in the Royal Canadian Navy.
Additionally, Balsillie is an active investor and advisor in the tech and innovation industries. He supports companies in cybersecurity, space technology, and digital governance while advocating for strong innovation policy in Canada and internationally.

As of 2026, Jim Balsillie’s net worth is approximately $800 million.
