Mirko Bibic

Montreal, Quebec

Mirko Bibic is a business executive best known as the President and CEO of BCE Inc., Canada’s largest communications network, and its wholly owned subsidiary Bell Canada. Before taking on that role, he had been a long-time employee at Bell, holding a number of different senior executive positions throughout the years. Prior to joining Bell, he worked at a prominent legal firm where he practiced business law, with a particular concentration in the areas of competition and regulatory compliance.

Early life

A first-generation Canadian, Mirko Bibic spent his formative years growing up in Montreal, Quebec, raised by his French mother, an administrator, and his Serbian father, a carpenter. Between 1986 and 1989, Bibic studied at McGill University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He would later conclude his formal education by earning a law degree from the University of Toronto.

In a long-form executive profile published by the Financial Post on January 10, 2020, journalist Joe O’Connor characterized Mirko Bibic as “a likable, working-class bilingual son of immigrant parents.”

Career

After graduating from the University of Toronto, Mirko Bibic began his professional career at Stikeman Elliott LLP, a major Canadian business law firm, where he specialized in competition and regulatory law.

In 2004, Bibic accepted an offer from Bell to become the company’s Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs. His expertise in legal and regulatory matters quickly became evident to those working with him and led to recognition from his superiors. This created the proper conditions for Mirko Bibic to climb the corporate ranks. He was made Bell’s Executive Vice President of Corporate Development and Chief Legal and Regulatory Officer a few years later. His outstanding performance in the latter role ultimately garnered him the honour of the ‘Canadian General Counsel of the Year’ in 2017, as awarded by the National Post and ZSA Legal Recruitment.

In 2018, he was appointed Bell’s Chief Operating Officer, responsible for all operations of Bell Mobility, Bell Business Markets, and Bell Home and Small Business. Taken as a whole, Mirko Bibic’s leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving in these roles helped to shape the overall strategic direction of the company.

Bibic was named as the President and Chief Executive Officer of BCE Inc. and Bell Canada in early 2020. Since then, he has been instrumental in steering the nearly 150-year old company into the modern era, directing it to upgrade its networks, foster service and content innovation, improve the customer experience, and refine general operational efficiency. During his stewardship, Mirko Bibic has also made a series of announcements regarding the company’s advancements with its wireless networks, as well as its TV, internet, and business communications services.

In an op-ed published in the Canadian politics and public policy magazine Policy, Bibic made the following assertions about the relationship between government and the private sector vis-a-vis the future of communications: “Inclusive economic growth and opportunity will not happen on its own. It will require coherent, consistently applied public policy at the federal level and business-led initiatives to achieve it. It is ultimately up to the private and public sectors, working together, to seize this once-in-a-life opportunity. Our communities and our country will be better for it.”

In addition to his responsibilities at Bell, Mirko Bibic serves on the boards of directors for the Royal Bank of Canada and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. He is also deeply involved in community initiatives, championing and co-chairing the nationwide Kids Help Phone campaign. Another notable aspect of Bibic’s leadership is his dedication to mental health advocacy through the Bell Let’s Talk initiative, and its hallmark event Bell Let’s Talk Day. The campaign is meant to encourage awareness about the mental health and wellness of Canadians, but it is also used as a means of funding care, research, and anti-stigma campaigns. Mirko Bibic’s support for causes such as these is emblematic of his far-sighted vision of making a positive impact on society all the while leading a profitable major corporation.
