G. Scott Paterson

G. Scott Paterson is a Toronto-based technology and media venture capitalist known for transforming traditional investment firms into leading tech-focused companies. Over his career, he has co-founded and led several high-growth businesses, including FutureVault, Symbility Solutions, JumpTV (later NeuLion), and QYOU Media.

Paterson has also served on numerous boards, including Lions Gate Entertainment, and has been involved in both public and private ventures spanning digital media, fintech, insurance technology, and data analytics. He is recognized for his financial expertise, entrepreneurial leadership, philanthropic initiatives, and contributions to the evolution of digital media and financial technology.

Early life

G. Scott Paterson was born on January 11, 1964, in Sarnia, Ontario. He was raised by his mother, a teacher at Lakeport High School.

Paterson developed an early interest in investing when his grandmother purchased five shares of Abitibi Paper for him as a birthday gift. By the age of nine, he was selling programs at Merrittville and Ransomville Speedways. At fifteen, he became an assistant track announcer at the speedways.

He attended Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School before completing Grades 12 and 13 at Ridley College with bursary support.

Paterson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Western Ontario in 1985 and later completed its Executive Programs in 1995.

Career

After graduating from the University of Western Ontario in 1985, Paterson began his career in retail brokerage at Dominion Securities Pitfield. During this period, he developed a reputation as a high-performing broker and “cold-call cowboy,” known for his aggressive client acquisition strategy.

In 1987, he joined Richardson Greenshields before moving to Midland Walwyn, where he became a senior investment banker. At Midland Walwyn, he gained recognition for leading numerous initial public offerings, earning the nickname “IPO King.”

In 1995, Paterson joined Yorkton Securities, a small brokerage focused primarily on mining companies. He played a key role in shifting the firm’s focus toward emerging sectors, including technology, internet companies, film, television, and biotechnology. When Paterson became Chief Executive Officer in 1998, he continued expanding the firm’s presence in growth industries. During his tenure as CEO from 1998 to 2001, Yorkton’s revenues grew to approximately $244 million with pre-tax profits of $56 million, helping establish the firm as a prominent player during the late-1990s technology boom.

During the late 1990s, Paterson also became the second investor in Lions Gate Entertainment, the film and television studio that would later grow into a major global entertainment company. He served on its Board of Directors from 1997 to 2018, including 15 years as Chairman of the Audit & Risk Committee, and continues to serve the company as Director of Lionsgate Canada.

Early in his career, Paterson became active in building and investing in technology and media ventures. He co-founded and served as Chairman and CEO of JumpTV, a digital streaming platform delivering international television channels over the internet. The company went public in 2006 with Morgan Stanley as the lead underwriter in a $71 million IPO. Two years later, it merged with NeuLion in a $250 million transaction. In 2018, it was sold to Endeavor Group for $325 million.

Paterson also co-founded Symbility Solutions, an insurance technology company specializing in software for property insurance claims processing. Serving as Chairman, the company experienced sustained growth before being acquired by CoreLogic for approximately $159.5 million CAD, representing one of Canada’s notable exits in the insurance technology sector.

He later co-founded FutureVault, a secure digital vault platform designed for financial institutions and professional services firms to manage sensitive documents, compliance workflows, and digital records.

Paterson also became Co-Founder and Chairman of QYOU Media, a media company listed on the TSX Venture Exchange that produces and distributes digital content targeting Gen Z and millennial audiences.

Throughout his career, Paterson has served on the boards of numerous public and private companies across the media, data analytics, fintech, and insurance technology sectors. He previously served as Chairman of Engagement Labs, a data and analytics firm specializing in measuring brand engagement across online and offline channels.

Beyond his work in finance and technology, Paterson has also appeared in small acting roles in films, including A Dark Truth (2012) and Ice Girls (2016).
