Education

Garrett Camp completed his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Calgary between 1996 and 2001. He followed his undergraduate degree with a Master of Science in Software Engineering from the same institution between 2001 and 2005.

Garrett Camp is a billionaire entrepreneur who specializes in technologically innovative ventures. His best-known companies include Uber and StumbleUpon, both of which he co-founded. While attending graduate school, Camp and three colleagues launched StumbleUpon in November 2001. StumbleUpon was an internet content discovery portal that worked similarly to a web search engine, but was personalized to match the interests of the user by drawing on recommendations from connected peers and social networks. In 2006, StumbleUpon moved to the San Francisco area after it successfully secured $1.2 million in funding from angel investors. In 2007 Ebay Inc acquired StumbleUpon for $75 million. Camp continued to run the company, however, he bought it back in 2009. As the CEO of the newly independent company, Garrett led the successful run with a five-fold increase in StumbleUpon user base that included 25 million users by 2012. In early 2009, Camp, along with Travis Kalanick, co-founded the car-hire company called UberCab, which later became Uber Technologies. Kalanick became CEO, while Camp joined the board of directors, serving as chair for several years. The service was launched in the San Francisco area in 2010 and gradually expanded across other United States and other international locations. In 2019, Uber hit the highest-valued private startup in the world. Today, Camp is currently chairman of Mix and a founding partner of business incubator Expa, through which he funds start-ups. One of his latest projects is Eco, originally intended to be a cryptocurrency but now a personal finance/investment app.
