Katrina Sriranpong

Katrina Sriranpong is a committed philanthropist, human rights advocate, former lawyer, and mother. Her defining feature is a dedication to social causes, humanitarian movements, and environmental preservation. Katrina Sriranpong brings a legal and international business background to advocating for the rights of marginalized groups particularly refugees, indigenous persons, and displaced children from conflict regions.

Early life

Katrina Sriranpong was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to immigrant parents of Thai descent.  She spent several years of her childhood living in Thailand immersed in the language and culture, which allowed her to be fully fluent in the language.

Katrina Sriranpong’s involvement in humanitarian work began during an internship with the International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice Policy, one of eighteen institutes comprising the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme Network of Institutes. She researched the effects of conflict and genocide on a worldwide level as well as corruption in the Chinese criminal justice system. Katrina credits her experience growing up in multicultural Vancouver, British Columbia with instilling a sense of social purpose in her life and legal career.

 

Career

Katrina Sriranpong attended the University of British Columbia and completed her undergraduate degree at Simon Fraser University.  She obtained her honours law degree from the University of Leicester and pursued further specialization in international law at the University of Oxford. Upon finishing her studies, Katrina Sriranpong sought a legal career focused on social justice and humanitarianism. She was admitted to the Law Society of British Columbia and the Law Society of Alberta.

As the only Thai-speaking lawyer in Vancouver, Katrina Sriranpong specialized in immigration and refugee law, specifically judicial reviews in the Federal Court of Canada to challenge negative decisions.  She assisted her clients in navigating complex legal rules and procedures while defending their rights in Canada. She has acted as an advocate for human trafficking victims and refugees escaping conflict and persecution, enabling them to find safety and asylum. Katrina Sriranpong’s advocacy raised awareness of the challenges for new refugees and immigrants in Canada and the need for certain policy reforms.
